Chasing After Change

Last month I wrote about New Year’s Resolutions, but what I really wanted to do was challenge you to ditch mediocrity. New Year’s Resolutions tap into something deep about us as human beings and as communities: we change.

Not that we want to change or that we should change:  We change!

We try our hardest to fight change by creating routines, but routines are just moments of choosing to do the same thing we've always done. Routines aren't always bad, but they can suffocate our true Self.

When we strive after this.hero.life, the Self defines what those choices mean to the trajectory of our life.

I began thinking about the Self when people began laughing at my Ph.D. If you know my friends, you know they wouldn’t let me get away with forcing them to call me “Doctor”—Yes, I tried!  I realized that I still thought about myself in words that had been shouted at me as a kid: a failure who was unworthy of love. But I wasn't that.

I changed without realizing it. I was so busy chasing down every dream I could dream that I unwittingly leapt into the reality of my Self.

New Year’s Resolutions are a reminder that we should always be striving to live this.hero.life. The beginning of a new year, a new season, or a new relationship is an opportunity to stop and think about our true Self and the life that will bring us the kind of happiness we only ever dreamed about.
